What it likely means
- Possible meaningOften an engine or emissions sensor issue. The system has flagged something to look into.
- Can I drive?A steady amber light usually means you can drive gently for now; a flashing light means stop as soon as it's safe.
- How soon to actHave it checked within a few days. Avoid hard acceleration until it's been looked at.

Common warning lights
A quick guide to the lights you're most likely to see, and what each one is telling you.
Check Engine
The engine or emissions system flagged an issue: steady means check soon, flashing means act now.
Oil Pressure
Engine oil pressure may be low. Stop safely and check, as driving on can cause serious damage.
Battery / Charging
The charging system isn't keeping up. The car may run on battery alone and could stall.
Brake
Low brake fluid, a sensor fault, or the parking brake is on. Treat anything brake-related as urgent.
Tire Pressure
One or more tires is under-inflated. Check and adjust pressures before a long drive.
Temperature
The engine may be overheating. Stop safely and let it cool to avoid lasting damage.
Color = urgency
The color tells you how soon to act
Most dashboard lights follow a simple color code. Knowing it helps you read the situation at a glance, but when something is unclear, it's always safest to treat it as urgent.
- Red: stop. A red light usually signals a serious or safety-related issue; pull over safely and don't keep driving.
- Amber / yellow: soon. A steady amber light means have it checked in the next few days; a flashing one means act now.
- Green / blue: info. These simply confirm a system is on or active, like lights or cruise control. No action needed.
