The priority is a complete brake-system check rather than simply replacing pads when they look thin. A technician should assess pad and disc or drum wear, brake-fluid condition, calipers or wheel cylinders, flexible hoses, metal lines, parking-brake operation, wheel bearings where relevant, and ABS warning lights. Corrosion deserves special attention in regions with road salt, coastal moisture, or long wet seasons.
For many vehicles, brake fluid is commonly replaced around every two to three years, although the owner’s manual is the controlling recommendation. Brake pads and discs have no universal replacement interval; they depend heavily on driving conditions. Short city trips, steep hills, towing, heavy loads, dusty roads, hot climates, and extreme cold can all increase wear or expose weaknesses sooner.
How can owners prepare without waiting for a failed inspection?
A sensible routine is to have the brakes checked at every regular service and before any required roadworthiness test. Many drivers schedule a general inspection roughly every 10,000-15,000 km (6,000-9,000 miles), or at least annually if they drive less. If the car has been parked for months, arrange a check before returning it to regular use, because seized components and corroded discs can develop while stationary.
Keep invoices and inspection reports together. They create a useful history of fluid changes, pad and disc measurements, repairs, and advisory notes. This record helps a workshop identify recurring issues and can reassure a future buyer. Repair costs vary widely: routine pads or fluid service may be relatively modest, while corroded lines, ABS faults, or major hydraulic repairs can be substantially more expensive.
