How do worn shock absorbers affect your car?
Worn shock absorbers reduce tyre grip, lengthen stopping distances on uneven roads, and make a vehicle less stable in corners, wind, and emergency manoeuvres. Replace them when inspection or testing confirms leakage, damage, or weak damping—not solely by mileage—because driving conditions and vehicle design greatly affect their lifespan.
Shock absorbers, and the struts used on many vehicles, do not hold the car up; springs do that job. Their role is to control spring movement after bumps, braking, and steering inputs. When damping fades gradually, drivers often adapt without noticing that the ride has become less controlled.
What are the common signs of worn shocks or struts?
The clearest sign is excessive bouncing. After a pothole or speed bump, the body may continue moving up and down instead of settling quickly. You may also notice nose-diving under braking, rear-end squat during acceleration, extra body roll in bends, or a vehicle that feels unsettled on rough surfaces.
Uneven, scalloped, or cupped tyre wear can point to poor damping, although incorrect tyre pressure, wheel alignment, worn suspension joints, and damaged tyres can cause similar patterns. Clunking may also come from strut mounts, links, bushes, or other suspension parts rather than the shock absorber itself, so diagnosis matters.
Why are worn shock absorbers a safety concern?
The main risk is reduced tyre contact with the road. A bouncing wheel has less consistent grip, which can affect braking, steering, traction control, and stability systems. The difference is especially noticeable in heavy rain, on gravel, over broken pavement, during towing, or when carrying a full load.
A worn unit can also make night driving more tiring because the car reacts less predictably to dips and uneven surfaces. In strong crosswinds or during an evasive manoeuvre, excess body movement can delay the vehicle’s response. These symptoms deserve attention even when there is no obvious fluid leak.
When should shock absorbers be inspected or replaced?
Have the suspension checked at routine servicing, commonly every 10,000–15,000 km (6,000–9,000 miles), and at least once a year. Ask for an earlier inspection after a severe pothole impact, kerb strike, collision, or a sudden change in ride quality. Requirements for roadworthiness inspections vary by country or state; examples include US state inspections, the UK MOT, German TÜV/HU, and other periodic technical inspections.
There is no universal replacement interval. Many original shocks or struts may show significant wear somewhere around 80,000–160,000 km (50,000–100,000 miles), but some last longer and others wear sooner. Hot climates, dusty roads, frequent short city trips, towing, poor road surfaces, and extreme cold can all shorten service life.
Replacement is usually best done in axle pairs so left and right damping remains balanced. A workshop may also recommend checking mounts, bump stops, protective boots, springs, alignment, and tyres at the same time. Strut replacement can affect wheel alignment, so an alignment check is often sensible afterward.
