What Happens When a Car Sits for Weeks?
Learn what happens when a car is unused for weeks and how to protect its battery, tires, brakes, fuel system, and fluids.
Know the main risks of short-term storage
The battery is often the first problem. Alarm systems, keyless-entry receivers, clocks, telematics, and other electronics draw a small amount of power while the vehicle is parked. A healthy battery can normally handle a few weeks, but an older battery, cold weather, or an existing electrical drain can leave it too weak to start the engine.
Tires slowly lose air over time, and a vehicle that remains in one position can develop temporary flat spots. Brake discs or rotors can gain a light layer of rust, especially in wet, coastal, or snowy climates. This is usually removed after a few gentle brake applications, although brakes that were already worn or sticking need professional attention.
Several weeks of parking does not normally require special fuel treatment. For longer storage, fuel can age and moisture can be a concern, particularly in humid conditions. Existing issues such as coolant leaks, rodent damage, or a weak battery may also become more noticeable when the vehicle is finally used again.
How do you prepare a car before leaving it parked?

Park on firm, level ground where possible. Choose a dry, secure location away from falling debris, flooding risk, and prolonged direct sun. Remove food, rubbish, and damp items from the cabin to discourage pests and mildew.

Check tire pressures when the tires are cold and inflate them to the pressure shown on the vehicle placard or owner’s manual. Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall as the normal target. Inspect each tire for visible damage or a slow leak.

Make sure the battery terminals are secure and free of heavy corrosion. If the car will be parked for more than a few weeks, use a quality smart battery maintainer that is compatible with the battery type, or follow the owner’s manual for safe battery disconnection procedures.

Close all windows, lock the vehicle, and ensure lights and accessories are switched off. Leave the parking brake applied when needed to prevent rolling; on a safe level surface, follow the manufacturer’s parking guidance and use wheel chocks if there is any possibility of movement.

Avoid starting the engine only to let it idle for a few minutes. Brief running may not replace the power used for starting and can add moisture to the oil and exhaust. If the car must be moved, drive it long enough to reach normal operating temperature, provided it is safe and legal to do so.
What should you check before driving again?

Walk around the vehicle first. Look for fluid puddles, damaged wiring, animal nesting material, low tires, and anything trapped around the wheels or exhaust. Check that the exhaust outlet is clear before starting the engine.

Check the engine oil level, coolant level where applicable, brake fluid level, and windshield-washer fluid. Start the engine and confirm that warning lights go out as expected. If a warning remains on, or the engine cranks slowly, do not ignore it.

Drive gently at first. Listen for unusual noises, test the brakes at low speed in a safe place, and allow the first few stops to clear light surface rust from the brake discs. Recheck tire pressures after the vehicle has been driven and cooled.
Continue normal maintenance based on both time and distance. Many vehicles need oil and filter service around every 10,000–15,000 km (6,000–9,000 miles) or once a year, but the correct interval depends on the engine, oil specification, and manufacturer schedule. Short city trips, dusty roads, towing, extreme cold, and hot climates can require more frequent service.
When should you get professional help?
Arrange an inspection if the car will not start after a proper battery charge, a tire remains low after inflation, brakes bind or grind, warning lights stay on, or you find fuel, oil, coolant, or brake-fluid leaks. Before returning a long-parked car to regular use, confirm that its required roadworthiness inspection is current. Requirements vary by country or state, such as US state inspections, the UK MOT, Germany’s TÜV/HU, or other EU periodic technical inspections.
