Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance and can wear faster.

Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule for oil, filters, spark plugs where fitted, and transmission service. Rotate tires as recommended, often around 8,000–12,000 km (5,000–7,500 miles), although the correct interval varies by vehicle and tire type. If the car pulls, vibrates, or shows uneven tire wear, have alignment and suspension checked.

Use climate controls and cargo sensibly

Air conditioning uses energy, especially in slow city traffic and very hot climates, but open windows can increase drag at higher speeds. Use the setting that is comfortable and appropriate for the journey instead of assuming one option is always cheaper. In extreme cold, allow time for safe visibility, but avoid long warm-up idling.

Remove heavy items you do not need and take off roof boxes, racks, or carriers when they are not in use. Extra weight matters most during stop-start driving, while roof-mounted accessories can noticeably increase aerodynamic drag at highway speeds. Towing also raises consumption, so drive more gently and check trailer tire pressures.

Measure results instead of guessing

Record distance traveled and fuel added over at least three fill-ups, then compare like-for-like journeys. Dashboard economy displays are useful, but calculations based on actual fuel purchases can reveal trends more reliably. A sudden drop in economy may point to low tire pressure, a maintenance issue, heavy traffic, seasonal weather, or a change in driving pattern.
