Should you use 95 or 98 octane fuel?
Use the octane grade specified on the fuel-filler flap or in the owner’s manual. A car designed for 95 RON normally gains little or nothing from 98 RON, while an engine requiring 98 RON should not routinely use 95. Higher octane resists knocking; it does not automatically provide more energy or cleaner running.
The number on the pump can make a higher-priced fuel seem like an upgrade for every engine. It is not. Octane is mainly a measure of a petrol fuel’s resistance to uncontrolled combustion, often called knock, pinging, or detonation. The right grade is the one the engine manufacturer calibrated the vehicle to use.
What do 95 and 98 RON actually mean?
In markets that label petrol by RON, or Research Octane Number, 98 RON tolerates greater compression and boost before it self-ignites than 95 RON. That matters in some turbocharged, high-compression, and performance engines, where combustion temperatures and cylinder pressures can be high.
In the United States and some other markets, pumps commonly show AKI, also called the anti-knock index, rather than RON alone. The figures are not directly interchangeable: 95 RON is broadly similar to about 91 AKI, while 98 RON is broadly similar to about 93 AKI. Always follow the label and manual for the vehicle in the country where it is operated.
When is 98 octane the right choice?
Choose 98 RON when the manufacturer says it is required. This instruction is common on certain high-output turbo engines, sports cars, and some luxury vehicles. Using the required grade helps the engine deliver its intended power and protects against persistent knock under demanding conditions such as hot climates, steep climbs, heavy loads, towing, or sustained high-speed driving where permitted.
Some manuals say a higher grade is recommended rather than required. In that case, the vehicle can generally run safely on the minimum stated grade, but may reduce power or efficiency when conditions are demanding. Modern knock sensors can adjust ignition timing to protect the engine, yet that adjustment may make the car feel less responsive. A recommended premium grade may be worthwhile if the improvement is noticeable and the extra cost fits your budget.
Why is 98 octane usually not an upgrade for a 95-octane car?
If the engine is designed for 95 RON, its ignition timing, compression ratio, and boost strategy may not be able to take advantage of 98 RON. The car will usually run normally, but it is unlikely to gain meaningful horsepower, fuel economy, or engine life simply because the octane number is higher.
Fuel formulations differ between brands and regions, and some premium products include enhanced detergent packages. Those additives, rather than the octane rating itself, may affect deposit control. A quality fuel that meets the applicable fuel standard and is sold by a reputable retailer is more important than buying the highest octane grade by default. If deposit control is a concern, check the fuel brand’s specifications and follow the vehicle maker’s maintenance advice.
Can using 95 octane damage a car that calls for 98?
Occasional use of the lower permitted grade is often addressed in the owner’s manual, and many modern cars will protect themselves by retarding ignition timing. However, repeatedly using fuel below a required minimum can cause knock, reduced performance, poorer economy, warning messages, or—especially in older or highly stressed engines—an increased risk of damage. Do not assume that electronic controls make the wrong fuel a permanent substitute.
If the wrong grade has been used once, avoid panic. Check the manual for its minimum and recommended ratings, drive gently if the lower grade is allowed only temporarily, and refill with the correct grade when practical. If you hear metallic rattling under acceleration, notice an engine warning light, or the manual prohibits the fuel used, seek advice from a qualified repairer. Never confuse an octane mismatch with misfuelling diesel into a petrol vehicle or petrol into a diesel vehicle; that requires different, urgent action.
How can you make the sensible fuel choice?
Start with the wording in the manual: “required,” “minimum,” and “recommended” have different meanings. The fuel-filler flap is a useful quick reference, but the manual gives the fuller explanation. Use the specified minimum at every fill-up, and consider the recommended higher grade only where the manufacturer permits it and your driving conditions justify it.
Keep a simple record over several full tanks if you are comparing permitted grades. Note fuel consumed, distance traveled, driving conditions, and price rather than relying on one short trip or the trip computer alone. A small apparent economy change can disappear when traffic, weather, tire pressures, route, or use of air conditioning changes. For most drivers, the best value is the lowest octane grade that meets the manufacturer’s requirement.
