Why headlights become hazy

Most haze begins when ultraviolet light, heat, road grit, and cleaning chemicals wear away the lens’s protective coating. The plastic then oxidizes, turning yellow, dull, or milky. Hot climates and long outdoor parking accelerate the process, while dusty roads can scratch the surface. Water droplets or fog inside the lamp are different problems: they may point to a damaged seal, blocked vent, or cracked housing rather than simple exterior oxidation.

When restoration can bring back usable light

Restoration is worthwhile when the cloudiness is on the outside and the lens remains structurally sound. A proper restoration removes the damaged outer layer, refines the surface, and finishes with a UV-resistant sealant or coating. Polishing alone can make a lens look clear temporarily, but without protection it may yellow again quickly. A professional result is often more durable, particularly on heavily oxidized lamps or vehicles that spend most days outdoors.

Replacement is the safer choice when the lens has deep internal haze, extensive crazing, cracks, loose mounting points, or persistent condensation. It is also sensible when the reflector coating has burned or peeled, because a clear lens cannot correct weak light created inside the housing. On some newer vehicles, integrated LED or adaptive headlamp units can be costly and may need professional diagnosis before any parts are ordered.

What inspectors and safety checks may notice

Inspection standards vary by country and state, but inspectors generally look for lamps that work, are securely mounted, show an acceptable beam pattern, and do not have damage that reduces light output or creates glare. A vehicle may be checked during a US state inspection, a UK MOT, German HU, or another EU periodic technical inspection. Severe cloudiness can reduce beam intensity enough to raise concerns even if both bulbs illuminate.

Aim matters as much as lens clarity. A newly restored or replaced headlight aimed too high can dazzle other drivers, while one aimed too low reduces the distance you can see. If one headlamp is much clearer or brighter than the other, restoring or replacing them as a pair usually produces a more even beam and a better night-driving result.

Keeping lenses clear between services

Prevention is less expensive than repeated restoration. Inspect both lenses every six months and during routine servicing, often every 10,000–15,000 km (6,000–9,000 miles), especially after harsh winter driving, long highway trips, or dusty conditions. Wash them with car-safe products rather than abrasive household cleaners, and remove bug residue and road film before it bakes onto warm plastic. A UV protectant designed for exterior automotive lenses can help preserve a sound factory coating.

Do not judge the headlights only in daylight. On a dark road, compare the spread and color of both beams, and watch for a sharp cutoff where your vehicle is designed to have one. If brightness has dropped despite good bulbs and clean lenses, have the charging system, wiring, housings, and lamp alignment checked. The issue may be more than surface haze.
