What does the P0420 catalyst efficiency code mean?
P0420 means the engine computer believes the catalytic converter on bank 1 is storing and cleaning exhaust less effectively than expected. A worn converter is common, but it is not the only cause. Exhaust leaks, aging oxygen sensors, misfires, and fuel-control problems can trigger the code and must be diagnosed first.
The code is usually described as “catalyst system efficiency below threshold, bank 1.” Bank 1 is the engine side containing cylinder No. 1; on an inline four-cylinder engine, there is generally only one bank. The computer compares the signals from the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors. A flashing check-engine light is more urgent than a steady P0420 because it commonly signals an active misfire that can quickly damage the catalyst. Repair costs vary widely because access, engine layout, sensor replacement, and state emissions requirements matter. Can you drive with a P0420 code?
