The most reliable check is a battery-health report paired with a proper road test. Ask for charging history, compare the displayed range with the model’s expected range, and have an EV-qualified workshop read the battery-management system. A low state of charge alone does not prove degradation.
A used EV can be an excellent purchase, but its traction battery deserves more attention than the fuel tank of a conventional car. Battery capacity gradually declines with age, mileage, charging habits, and climate. Some loss is normal; what matters is whether the remaining usable capacity, charging performance, and warranty coverage still suit your driving needs.
What does a battery-health report reveal?
The best evidence is a diagnostic report from the vehicle’s battery-management system, often called a state-of-health report. It may show usable battery capacity, estimated degradation, cell-voltage balance, stored fault codes, and charging data. A seller’s dashboard range estimate is useful context, but it changes with temperature, driving style, heating or air conditioning use, tires, and recent journeys.
Ask an independent EV-qualified technician to scan the car before purchase, especially if the vehicle is out of its battery warranty. The report should be interpreted alongside the car’s age and mileage. A vehicle driven 100,000 km (62,000 miles) may still have strong capacity, while a lower-mileage vehicle exposed to prolonged heat or long periods at full charge may not.
How should range and charging be tested?
A road test turns the paperwork into a real-world picture. Begin with a reasonably charged battery and note the displayed state of charge, estimated range, outside temperature, and energy use. Drive a mixed route if possible, including urban traffic and faster roads. Look for sudden percentage drops, restricted power, warning messages, unusual cooling-fan noise, or a range estimate that changes dramatically without a clear reason.
If practical, test both AC charging and rapid DC charging. The car should start charging without repeated errors and should not show persistent battery or high-voltage warnings. Charging speed naturally slows as the battery fills and may be limited when the battery is cold or hot, so do not judge a car from one charging session alone. Check whether the model has a known charging curve and compare the result under similar conditions.
Which records and physical checks matter?
Review service records, software-update history, accident repairs, recalls, and the remaining battery warranty. Many manufacturers cover the high-voltage battery for roughly eight years, often with a mileage limit and a minimum capacity threshold, but terms differ by brand, model year, and market. Confirm that coverage transfers to a new owner and whether it applies in the country where you will register the car.
Look underneath for impact damage around the battery enclosure, missing shields, corrosion, coolant leaks, or signs of poor repair. A battery pack is protected by the vehicle structure, yet damage from a severe underside strike can be costly. A standard vehicle inspection may not assess battery capacity in detail: requirements vary by country or state, including US state inspections, UK MOT testing, German TÜV/HU checks, and other EU periodic technical inspections.
What battery history should make you cautious?
Frequent rapid charging is not automatically a reason to reject an EV, but it is worth discussing alongside climate and use. Regular towing, hot climates, dusty roads, repeated deep discharge, or years of sitting unused can place additional demands on the battery system. Conversely, short city trips are generally gentle on mileage but can hide a car that has spent long periods parked at a very high or very low charge.
A clean diagnostic scan, consistent range, normal charging behavior, and complete records are stronger together than any single number. If the seller will not allow an independent inspection, cannot explain warning lights, or provides a report without a date, vehicle identification number, or test details, treat that as a reason to walk away or negotiate only after specialist advice.
