Automakers use different fluids and service plans, and some modern transmissions are described as having “lifetime” fluid. That wording usually means the expected vehicle life under normal use, not that fluid can never degrade. Ask a qualified workshop what the manufacturer defines as normal and severe service before postponing maintenance.

Warning signs include slipping, shuddering, delayed engagement when selecting Drive or Reverse, flare in engine speed during shifts, burning smells, puddles beneath the vehicle, or a transmission warning light. Dark fluid alone is not a reliable diagnosis, since appearance varies by fluid type. Continuing to drive with serious shifting symptoms can turn a manageable repair into a transmission rebuild or replacement.
Drain and fill versus transmission flush
A drain and fill replaces only part of the old fluid, but it is often the manufacturer-approved service and may include a filter, pan gasket, or magnets inspection. A fluid exchange or flush can replace more fluid, yet it is not appropriate for every transmission or every high-mileage vehicle. Follow the vehicle maker’s procedure and avoid aggressive flushing if a reputable technician advises against it, especially when maintenance history is unknown or the transmission is already slipping.
Protect the transmission between services
The best routine care is preventing overheating and leaks. Use the correct towing mode if fitted, stay within the vehicle’s tow rating, allow the transmission to warm up gently in extreme cold, and address engine-cooling problems promptly because many automatics use the radiator or a dedicated cooler to manage fluid temperature. Periodic vehicle checks may identify leaks; requirements vary by country or state, such as through a US state inspection, UK MOT, German HU, or other periodic technical inspection.
