How to Check Whether Your Alternator Is Charging Properly
Learn how to test alternator charging voltage, inspect connections, and spot signs of a failing charging system.
What you need before testing
The most reliable basic test uses a digital multimeter set to DC volts. You will also need safe access to the battery terminals and, ideally, a helper to switch electrical accessories on and off. Park on level ground, select Park or neutral, apply the parking brake, and keep hands, clothing, and tools away from belts and fans.
Start with a reasonably charged battery. A weak or damaged battery can make a good alternator appear faulty, while a recent battery charge can temporarily produce misleading surface voltage. If the battery case is swollen, leaking, badly corroded, or smells strongly of sulfur, have the battery and charging system professionally inspected.
How do you test charging voltage with a multimeter?

Step 1
Turn the engine off and switch off lights, climate control, chargers, and other accessories. Touch the multimeter’s red probe to the positive battery terminal and the black probe to the negative terminal. After the vehicle has rested, a healthy fully charged conventional 12-volt battery commonly reads about 12.6 volts; around 12.4 volts indicates partial charge.

Start the engine and measure again at the same terminals. Many conventional charging systems produce roughly 13.7 to 14.7 volts at idle. However, modern smart-charging systems may intentionally vary voltage, sometimes closer to battery voltage and sometimes near 15 volts, depending on temperature, battery condition, and electrical demand. Check the vehicle manual if available.

Turn on several electrical loads, such as headlights, rear window defogger, cabin blower, and seat heaters where fitted. The voltage should generally remain stable enough to support the system and should not steadily fall below the battery’s resting voltage. Raise engine speed slightly if permitted by the manufacturer; a large, continuing voltage drop suggests further diagnosis is needed.

Inspect the serpentine belt, alternator wiring, battery cables, and ground connections with the engine off. The belt should not be cracked, glazed, contaminated with oil, or slipping. Terminals should be clean and tight. Do not test an alternator by disconnecting a battery cable while the engine is running, because voltage spikes can damage vehicle electronics.
What readings and symptoms suggest a charging fault?
A running voltage that stays near 12 volts usually means the battery is not receiving meaningful charge. Voltage consistently above about 15 volts can indicate overcharging, which may damage the battery and sensitive electronics. Flickering lights, repeated low-battery warnings, slow cranking after driving, a burning-rubber smell, whining noises, or an illuminated battery warning light also justify a prompt inspection.
A battery warning light does not always mean the battery itself has failed. It often means the charging system has detected a problem involving the alternator, drive belt, wiring, fuse, battery sensor, or control module. A scan tool and professional charging-system test can identify faults that a basic voltage check cannot.
When should you inspect the charging system?
Check battery terminals and visible belt condition at least every six months, and test the charging system during routine servicing, especially before winter or long trips. An extra check is sensible after 10,000-15,000 km (6,000-9,000 miles) of hot-weather driving, dusty-road use, frequent short city trips, towing, or extreme cold. Belt replacement intervals vary widely by vehicle, so follow the maintenance schedule.
If the battery warning light comes on while driving, reduce unnecessary electrical loads and stop safely as soon as practical. Continuing to drive can drain the battery until the engine stalls. Requirements for vehicle inspections vary by country or state; for example, periodic technical inspections may identify warning lights or obvious electrical defects, but they do not replace a full charging-system diagnosis.
