Clicking From Front Wheels at Full Lock: CV Joint Signs

What does a failing CV joint sound and feel like?
The classic outer CV-joint symptom is a fast, rhythmic click-click-click that speeds up with the wheel while making a tight turn. It is often louder when gently accelerating and may be heard during parking-lot maneuvers, U-turns, or backing with the steering near full lock. The noise can come from either side, and sound can travel through the subframe, so do not assume the loudest side is automatically the failed joint.
A torn CV boot is an important clue. Look behind each front wheel for a ribbed rubber or thermoplastic boot on the axle shaft. Grease flung onto the inside of the wheel, tire sidewall, suspension parts, or underbody suggests the boot has leaked. Once dirt and water enter the joint, grease alone rarely restores a clicking joint.
How can you check for a CV joint problem?
Start with a controlled road test and visual inspection. Avoid holding the steering against its stop for more than a moment, because full-lock steering loads the power-steering system and tires even on a healthy vehicle. If the car has severe vibration, a loose wheel, grinding, or difficulty moving, arrange a tow rather than performing a driving test.

In an empty parking lot, drive slowly in a wide circle to the left, then to the right. Repeat with very light acceleration. Note whether the clicking is rhythmic, whether it changes with vehicle speed, and whether it is worse in one direction.

Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and inspect the visible inner and outer CV boots with a flashlight. Look for splits, missing clamps, wet grease, or grease sprayed in a circular pattern around the wheel well. Do not crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack.

With the vehicle safely parked, check for related clues: vibration during acceleration, a shudder on takeoff, or a clunk when shifting between drive and reverse. Ask a qualified technician to check axle-joint play, wheel bearings, ball joints, tie-rod ends, and brake hardware before approving repairs.
What else can cause clicking while turning?
A CV joint is the most common cause of repetitive clicking under power on a front-wheel-drive vehicle, and it is also common on all-wheel-drive vehicles. However, loose brake pads or caliper hardware can click once when changing direction, a worn wheel bearing more often hums or growls with speed, and a damaged steering stop or strut mount may pop or creak. A rock caught near a brake rotor can scrape continuously, while worn tie-rod ends or ball joints can clunk over bumps and during steering changes.
When should a clicking CV axle be repaired?
Repair a confirmed clicking CV joint soon, especially if the noise is getting louder, grease is visible, or vibration has begun. A boot caught early can sometimes be replaced and the joint repacked if the joint is still quiet and clean. Once an outer joint clicks, shops commonly replace the complete CV axle because it is usually more reliable than rebuilding a worn joint. Many original boots last beyond 80,000-120,000 miles (129,000-193,000 km), but road salt, potholes, age, and torn boots can shorten that life.
Typical repair costs vary widely by vehicle, axle design, parts quality, and local labor rates. Expect a broad range from a few hundred dollars for a common front axle replacement to substantially more for luxury, performance, or integrated axle assemblies. Use quality parts and have the axle nut tightened to the manufacturer specification; incorrect torque can damage a wheel bearing.
How can you prevent CV joint damage?
Inspect CV boots during oil-service visits, tire rotations, and brake work, typically every 5,000-7,500 miles (8,000-12,000 km) for many vehicles or according to the owner's manual. Promptly investigate grease around a wheel well, avoid driving with a visibly torn boot, and be cautious after impacts with deep potholes or curbs. Depending on your state, an inspection may identify some steering or suspension safety issues, but it is not a substitute for checking new noises.
