What can cause fuel odour in the cabin?
The most common cause is fuel vapour escaping from the filler cap, filler neck, fuel tank, fuel lines, injector seals, or connections in the engine bay. A loose, damaged, or incorrect fuel cap may allow vapour to escape, especially after refuelling. On older vehicles, rubber hoses and seals can crack with age, heat, and exposure to fuel.
Modern petrol vehicles also use an evaporative-emissions system, often called EVAP. A split vapour hose, faulty purge valve, leaking charcoal canister, or damaged tank vent can release fumes and may trigger a check-engine warning. Diesel has lower vapour pressure, but a diesel smell can still indicate a liquid leak at an injector, fuel filter housing, line, or tank connection.
Fuel odour may also be drawn in from outside rather than leaking directly into the cabin. Exhaust leaks, missing underbody seals, damaged door or hatch seals, and a blocked cabin air intake drain can allow engine-bay or roadside fumes to enter. The smell may be most noticeable with the heater, air conditioning, or recirculation setting changed.
How serious is a fuel smell?
A brief smell immediately after refuelling may be from a small spill on the bodywork or shoes, but it should fade quickly after cleaning and ventilation. A continuing smell is not normal. Escaping fuel presents a fire risk when it reaches hot exhaust parts or an ignition source, while fuel vapours and exhaust gases can cause headache, nausea, or light-headedness in an enclosed cabin.
Do not ignore fuel smell because a vehicle still drives normally. Park outdoors, switch off the engine, avoid smoking, flames, and sparks, and keep people away from any visible leak. If fuel is dripping, pooling, or the smell is strong, do not restart the vehicle; arrange recovery and professional inspection.
How to check a fuel smell safely

Park outdoors on level ground, switch off the engine, and let hot components cool. Ventilate the cabin by opening doors or windows. Do not use a lighter, smoke, or inspect with an open flame, and do not touch fuel-soaked parts.

Check whether the smell began after refuelling. Inspect the fuel cap for a damaged seal, dirt, cross-threading, or a cap that does not tighten correctly. Look around the filler door and down the side of the vehicle for spilled fuel or staining, then clean any minor spill according to the vehicle manual.

With the engine off, look under the vehicle and around the engine bay for wet patches, drips, cracked hoses, or a strong localized smell. Check only readily visible areas; do not disconnect fuel lines, remove pressurized components, or reach near belts and fans.

What should a workshop inspect?
A proper inspection normally covers the fuel cap and filler neck, tank seams and vent lines, visible fuel pipes, fuel filter connections where fitted, injector seals, fuel rail connections, and EVAP components. The workshop may use a scan tool or smoke-testing equipment to find vapour leaks that do not leave visible liquid fuel.
It should also include the exhaust system and the body seals that separate the engine bay, luggage area, and cabin. This matters because an exhaust leak can be mistaken for a fuel smell. Requirements vary by country or state: periodic checks such as US state inspections, a UK MOT, German TÜV/HU, or other EU periodic technical inspections may identify some emissions or exhaust faults, but they do not replace diagnosis of a noticeable odour.
How can you reduce the chance of fuel-system problems?
Use the correct fuel cap and replace it when its seal is split or the cap no longer locks properly. Avoid repeatedly topping off the tank after the pump first stops, as overfilling can saturate EVAP components. Have hoses, seals, and filters inspected during routine servicing, particularly on high-mileage vehicles and those used in hot climates, on dusty roads, for short city trips, towing, or extreme cold.
