What does a serpentine belt do?
The serpentine belt is the long, ribbed belt on the front or side of the engine. It transfers engine power to accessories such as the alternator, water pump on many vehicles, power-steering pump, air-conditioning compressor, and sometimes a vacuum pump. If it slips or breaks, the battery may stop charging, steering may become much harder, the engine may overheat, or the air conditioning may quit.
Which belt symptoms mean replacement is likely?
Replace or have the belt inspected promptly when you find missing ribs, frayed edges, chunks missing, glazing, contamination from oil or coolant, or a belt that has stretched beyond its tensioner’s range. On modern EPDM rubber belts, obvious cracks are less reliable than they were on older neoprene belts. A belt-wear gauge can reveal rib wear that is difficult to see.
A chirp that changes with engine speed often points to belt misalignment, worn pulley bearings, or a damaged rib. A higher-pitched squeal during startup, rain, sharp steering input, or air-conditioner use usually means the belt is slipping. Do not spray belt dressing on a modern serpentine belt as a fix: it can mask the cause and attract dirt.
How can you inspect a serpentine belt safely?

Park on level ground, switch the engine off, remove the key or keep the key fob away, and let hot engine components cool. Never inspect, touch, or route a belt with the engine running.

Use the belt-routing diagram under the hood or in the owner’s manual to identify the belt and each pulley. If no diagram is available, take a clear photo before removing anything.

Check the ribbed side for missing material, uneven wear, embedded debris, and polished or flattened ribs. Check the back of the belt for fraying, cracking, glazing, and fluid contamination.

Look around the belt path for oil, coolant, or power-steering-fluid leaks. Spin accessible pulleys only with the belt removed and the engine off; roughness, wobble, or grinding suggests a failing pulley bearing or accessory.

Inspect the belt at each oil change or roughly every 5,000 to 7,500 miles (8,000 to 12,000 km). Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s maintenance schedule, and replace the belt sooner if damage, repeated noise, or accessory problems appear.
Why does a new serpentine belt still squeal?
A new belt that squeals is often not the real problem. Common causes include a weak automatic tensioner, seized or wobbling idler pulley, alternator pulley misalignment, a failing alternator bearing, an air-conditioning compressor beginning to bind, or fluid leaking onto the belt. Installing the wrong belt length or rib count can also cause immediate noise and premature wear.
If the battery warning light comes on with squealing, reduce driving and stop as soon as it is safe. The alternator may not be charging. If the temperature gauge rises or a coolant warning appears, shut the engine off promptly because a belt-driven water pump may no longer be circulating coolant.
When should the belt tensioner and pulleys be replaced?
Replace the tensioner or idler pulley when it rattles, moves excessively, has a weak spring, shows bearing play, or repeatedly allows a good belt to slip. Many shops recommend closely inspecting these parts whenever a belt is replaced, especially near 90,000 to 120,000 miles (145,000 to 193,000 km). Replacing a failed pulley later can destroy a new belt.
What does serpentine belt replacement usually cost?
The belt itself is usually a relatively inexpensive part, but total repair cost varies with engine access and whether a tensioner, idler pulley, or leaking seal also needs work. Expect a broad range from a modest service to several hundred dollars when related components are replaced. A transverse V6 or tightly packaged turbo engine can require substantially more labor than a simple four-cylinder layout.
