Is it safe to keep driving?

What causes the diesel particulate filter (DPF) light?
Most common first. Symbols and meanings vary by manufacturer; your owner's manual has the definitive meaning for your model.
- Repeated short trips. The filter cleans itself by burning soot at high exhaust temperatures. Short, slow trips never get hot enough, so soot builds up until the light comes on.
- Interrupted or failed regeneration. Switching off mid-cycle, or another fault — a sensor, an injector, the EGR valve — can stop the car from running a regeneration.
- Wrong engine oil. Diesels with a DPF need low-ash oil of the specification in the manual. The wrong oil leaves ash that a regeneration cannot burn off.

- Keep the engine in a lower gear, at steady revs, without switching off mid-drive, so the regeneration can finish.
- If the light does not clear, or turns red or flashes, have the car seen before the filter blocks completely.

A filter loaded with ash, or past the point a regeneration can help, is cleaned off the car or replaced. The cause — a sensor, injector or oil — has to be fixed too or the new filter clogs again.
