The EV or hybrid low battery light means the high-voltage battery's charge is low. In a hybrid, the gas engine simply runs more to recharge it. In an electric car, the range is nearly gone, so head straight for a charger, drive gently and switch off cabin heating or cooling you can do without.

What causes the EV / hybrid low battery light?

- Charge used up. The battery has reached the low point the car warns at. Remaining range depends on speed, temperature and terrain.
- Cold weather reducing usable range. Cold batteries deliver less energy and cabin heating uses a lot of it, so range shrinks noticeably in winter.
- Heavy load or high speed. Highway speeds, climbs, towing and roof racks use energy much faster than town driving.
