What causes the seat belt reminder light?
Most common first. Symbols and meanings vary by manufacturer; your owner's manual has the definitive meaning for your model.
- An unbuckled occupant. The reason the light exists. Many cars also show which seat, including the rear seats.
- Heavy items on the passenger seat. The passenger seat's occupancy sensor can mistake a heavy bag or a box for a person and ask for a belt.
- Faulty buckle switch. A switch inside the buckle tells the car the belt is fastened. Dirt or a worn switch reports a fastened belt as open.
What should you do right now?
- Buckle every occupant.
- Move heavy bags off the passenger seat or onto the floor.
- If it stays on with everyone belted, have the buckle switch checked — the same switch can affect how the airbags deploy on some cars.
What does the fix usually involve?
A buckle that does not register is cleaned or replaced. On many cars the buckle switch feeds the airbag system, so a fault can also bring on the airbag light.
