How often should you change engine oil?
For most cars, change the engine oil every 10,000 to 15,000 km (6,000 to 9,000 miles) or once a year, whichever comes first. Full-synthetic oil can often go longer, while short city trips, dust, towing, or extreme cold wear it out faster. Always confirm the interval in your owner's manual.
Engine oil lubricates, cools, cleans, and protects the moving parts inside your engine. Over time it breaks down, collects contaminants, and loses its lubricating ability, so changing it on schedule prevents accelerated wear and costly failures. Modern engines with tighter tolerances and turbochargers are especially sensitive to old, degraded oil, which is one reason many manufacturers now specify full-synthetic oil from the factory.
How do you know it is time?
Common signs: the oil-pressure or oil-change warning light comes on, the dipstick shows very dark or gritty oil, engine noise grows, or you have simply passed the recommended interval. Driving conditions shift the timing too — hot climates, dusty roads, heavy loads, towing, or lots of short trips all shorten oil life. When in doubt, change it early rather than late; fresh oil is far cheaper than a rebuilt engine.
