How often should you change your engine oil?

By Unbroken

For most cars in Israel, change the engine oil every 10,000 to 15,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first. Cars running full synthetic oil can often go longer, while short city trips and dusty conditions wear the oil out faster. Always check the manufacturer interval in your owner manual.

Engine oil lubricates, cools and protects the moving parts. Over time it breaks down and loses its lubricating ability, so changing it on schedule prevents accelerated wear and costly failures.

How do you know it is time?

Common signs: the oil-pressure light turns on, very dark oil on the dipstick, growing engine noise, or simply passing the recommended interval. When in doubt, change it early rather than late.

Is synthetic oil worth the extra cost?
+
Usually yes. Synthetic oil keeps its properties longer and at extreme temperatures and allows longer change intervals. Many newer cars require synthetic by the manufacturer.
What happens if you change it late?
+
The oil turns thick and dirty, lubrication suffers and engine wear increases. A significant delay can shorten engine life and cause expensive failures.
