The red oil pressure light means the engine is not getting enough oil pressure to stay lubricated. Do not keep driving: pull over as soon as it is safe and switch the engine off. Then check the oil level. If the level is correct and the light stays on after a restart, have the car towed.

Is it safe to keep driving?
No. Pull over safely and shut the engine off as soon as you can. Running an engine without oil pressure can seize it in minutes.
Stop driving now if:
- The red oil light comes on and stays on while you drive — this is the stop, not a later one.
- The light flickers and you also hear ticking, tapping or knocking from the engine.
- You see oil smoke, or oil dripping or spraying under the car.
- The oil level is correct on the dipstick but the light stays on after a restart.
What causes the oil pressure warning light?
Most common first. Symbols and meanings vary by manufacturer; your owner's manual has the definitive meaning for your model.
- Oil level far too low. An engine that leaks or burns oil eventually runs so low that the pump draws air, first in corners and under braking, then all the time. A light that flickers in turns is the classic early sign.
- Faulty oil pressure sensor or wiring. The sender is a cheap part and does fail, giving a false warning. But only a mechanic with a mechanical gauge can prove it is the sensor — never assume so and keep driving.
- Wrong viscosity or badly overdue oil. Oil that is too thin for the engine, or oil that has broken down and sludged, cannot hold pressure, especially at a hot idle.
- Worn engine bearings. On a high-mileage engine, worn bearing clearances let pressure bleed away. The light usually flickers at hot idle first and goes out when you rev the engine.
- Failing oil pump or blocked pickup screen. Sludge can clog the screen the pump draws through, and a worn pump moves less oil. Some modern engines use a variable oil pump whose control valve can also fail.
What should you do right now?
- Signal, pull over somewhere safe and switch the engine off. Do not idle it to see whether the light goes away.
- Wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back down, then pull the dipstick, wipe it, push it fully back in and read the level.
- If it is low and you have the oil grade named in the owner's manual or on the filler cap, top up to between the marks. Do not overfill.
- Restart. The light should go out within a couple of seconds. If it stays on, or the engine makes new noises, switch off and have the car towed.
- If topping up put the light out, drive gently to a shop and find out where the oil went — a leak or an engine that burns oil will run low again.
What does the fix usually involve?
A shop first measures the real pressure with a mechanical gauge fitted in place of the sender. That single test separates a failed sensor from a real lubrication problem.
If the pressure is good, the fix is a new sender or a wiring repair — the cheap outcome.
If the pressure is low: an oil and filter change with the correct grade, cleaning the pickup screen, or replacing the oil pump. Low pressure from worn bearings means an engine rebuild or replacement.
Whatever the cause, the leak or the oil consumption that emptied the engine has to be fixed too: a valve cover or oil pan gasket, a drain plug, a filter seal, or worn rings and valve seals.

Common questions
What is the difference between the red oil pressure light and an amber oil level light?
Some cars have a separate amber or yellow oil LEVEL warning — an oil can with a wavy line, or a “low oil level” message. That one means top up soon. The RED oil can means pressure is low right now and you should stop. Your owner's manual shows which your car has.
Can I drive to a shop if I top up the oil and the light goes out?
Usually, if the light stays out, the engine sounds normal and the shop is close. Drive gently, check the level again when you arrive, and have the cause found. If the light returns on the way, stop again.
Why does the oil light flicker at idle?
Oil pressure is lowest when the engine is hot and idling. A flicker there often means the oil level is low, the oil is too thin or old, or the engine is worn. Check the level first; if it is correct, have the pressure measured.
How long can an engine run without oil pressure?
There is no safe amount. Bearing damage can start almost at once, and an engine run for minutes without pressure can seize. That is why the advice is to switch off as soon as you are safely stopped.
