Urgency:Stop driving
Is it safe to keep driving?
No. Pull over safely and shut the engine off as soon as you can. Running an engine without oil pressure can seize it in minutes.
Likely causes
- Oil level far too low (leak or consumption)
- Failed oil pump
- Faulty oil pressure sensor or wiring
- Wrong oil viscosity or badly degraded oil
- Blocked oil pickup screen
Typical repair cost (US)
$30 – $1,500
Topping up oil or a sensor at the low end; an oil pump or engine damage at the high end.
A typical range, not a quote. Actual cost depends on the car, the shop and the fault.
What to do now
- Stop, switch off, and let the engine sit a few minutes before checking the dipstick.
- If oil is low and you have the correct oil, top up and see if the light goes out on restart. If it stays on, do not drive.
- Have the car towed if the light stays on with the oil level correct.
