Why does an engine overheat in traffic?

An engine that overheats in traffic usually has a cooling-system problem that becomes obvious when there is little natural airflow. A failed cooling fan, low coolant, restricted radiator, faulty thermostat, weak water pump, or pressure leak can prevent heat from leaving the engine quickly enough.

On an open road, air is forced through the radiator as the vehicle moves. In slow queues, stop-start city driving, or long idling periods, the electric or belt-driven cooling fan must do much more of that work. That is why a temperature gauge may look normal at highway speed but climb when traffic slows. Turning on the air conditioning can add heat load and may make an existing fault more noticeable.

The cooling fan is often the first suspect

A fan fault is one of the most common reasons for overheating at low speed. The fan may not switch on because of a failed motor, fuse, relay, wiring connection, temperature sensor, fan control module, or fan clutch on some mechanically driven systems. A working fan may also run too slowly or only one fan may operate on vehicles with two fans. If the temperature falls again once the car is moving, insufficient fan airflow is a strong clue, though it is not a complete diagnosis.

Low coolant and leaks reduce the system’s safety margin

Low coolant leaves less liquid available to carry heat away from the engine. Small leaks can be difficult to spot because coolant may evaporate on a hot engine or collect beneath undertrays. Look for a sweet smell, coloured residue around hoses or the radiator, damp patches near the water pump, or repeated low-level warnings. Never remove a radiator or expansion-tank cap while the engine is hot: pressurised coolant can cause serious burns. Check the level only after the engine has cooled fully, following the vehicle manual.

Restricted flow can make heat build up quickly

A thermostat that sticks closed restricts coolant flow to the radiator, while a worn water pump, collapsed hose, clogged radiator, or contaminated coolant can reduce circulation or heat transfer. Dirt, leaves, insects, mud, or damaged fins on the front of the radiator and air-conditioning condenser can also block airflow. These problems may develop gradually, so an engine may first overheat only during hot-weather traffic, towing, steep climbs, or prolonged air-conditioning use.

Continuing to drive while hot can cause expensive damage

Severe overheating can warp the cylinder head, damage the head gasket, crack plastic cooling-system parts, harm seals, and degrade engine oil. In extreme cases, pistons, bearings, or the engine block can be damaged. A blown head gasket may allow coolant and oil to mix, cause white exhaust smoke, misfires, loss of compression, or ongoing coolant loss. The final repair can range from a relatively modest hose or fan repair to major engine work, so stopping early matters.

Treat a rising temperature warning as a reason to reduce risk

If the temperature warning appears or the gauge enters the hot zone, safely turn off the air conditioning, reduce engine load, and pull over as soon as conditions allow. Do not keep driving simply because the warning disappears briefly. If steam is visible, coolant is pouring out, the engine runs roughly, or the warning remains on, switch off the engine and arrange recovery. Running the cabin heater at maximum can transfer some heat from the engine, but it is only a temporary measure to reach a safe stopping place, not a repair.

Regular checks can catch cooling issues before a traffic jam does

Check coolant level and visible hoses during routine under-bonnet inspections, especially before hot-weather travel or towing. Many vehicles need an oil and general fluid check around every 10,000-15,000 km (6,000-9,000 miles), although the manufacturer schedule always takes priority. Coolant replacement intervals vary widely by coolant type and vehicle, commonly from several years to much longer, so use the specified coolant rather than mixing unknown products. Hot climates, dusty roads, short city trips, and extreme cold can all justify more frequent checks.

It is safer not to. If the temperature is above normal, a warning is active, or steam is present, stop as soon as it is safe and let the engine cool.
