Warning lights

Power steering warning light

The power steering system has a fault. Steering will become very heavy, especially at low speed.

Urgency:Service soon

Is it safe to keep driving?

Carefully, and only to a nearby shop. The car still steers, but it takes much more effort — parking and slow corners are hardest. If the wheel becomes hard to turn at all, stop.

Likely causes

  • Low power steering fluid or a leak (hydraulic systems)
  • Electric power steering motor or sensor fault
  • Failed power steering pump or belt
  • Low system voltage

Typical repair cost (US)

$20 – $1,800

Fluid at the low end; an electric steering rack at the high end.

A typical range, not a quote. Actual cost depends on the car, the shop and the fault.

What to do now

  1. On a hydraulic system, check the fluid level. On an electric system, restarting the car sometimes clears a transient fault.
  2. Have it inspected before any highway driving.
